What is a Registered Dietitian?

Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credentials are a protected national registration title that can only be used by practitioners who are authorized by the Commission on Dietetic Registration from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

What are the qualifications of an RD or RDN?

A registered dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who has met academic and professional requirements including:

  1. Earned at minimum a four-year degree with course work approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Coursework typically includes food and nutrition sciences, foodservice systems management, business, economics, computer science, sociology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology and chemistry. A Master’s degree is also desirable and may be a requirement for future RDs and RDNs.
  2. Completed 900+hrs of an accredited, supervised practice program at a health-care facility, community agency and foodservice establishment.
  3. Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  4. Completes continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration.

What should I expect during the initial visit?

During your first nutritional consultation (initial) expect to respond to questions about your complete medical and social histories, questions that explore your goals, previous diets and their outcomes, your relationship with food and family history. These will help develop strategies that will help you accomplish your goals and coach you along the way.

Does insurance cover Nutritional Consultations?

Health insurance plans may or may not offer coverage for Medical Nutrition Therapy. The recommendation is to carefully investigate the type of coverage you have. Payment and applicable insurance reimbursements are the responsibility of the client. Payment is due and expected at the time you book the appointment. Checks should be made payable to DocRD™ L.L.C. PayPal and credit cards are also accepted.

After the consultation, you will be provided with a receipt that you may submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Individual appointments are scheduled for a specific time. A $25 cancellation fee will be billed to the individual for the missed appointment unless the DocRD™ is notified of cancellation at least 24 hours in advance.

How do I book an appointment?

Can I use your services if I live out of state?

Yes, a nutritional consultation usually is done in person, but it can take place over the phone, FaceTime or Skype.

Where would the nutritional consultation take place?

Nutritional consultations can take place at our home office or at you home where there is access to the kitchen and food preparation areas (preferred).
